Those with unpaid parking tickets will soon see a change in how their fines are assessed.

The Oxford Board of Aldermen approved a change to the fine structure that will simplify the process in paying delinquent parking tickets. The Board unanimously voted in favor of the change during their July 7 meeting after a second reading and public hearing that received no participation in favor of or against the changes.

Anyone issued a parking ticket due to an expired meter will now pay a $15 fine within the first 14 days of the ticket being issued. Any ticket paid after the first 14 days will pay a $25 fine. The new prices are also for parking tickets in permitted off-street lots.

Previously, the fine structure was $10 for the first and second tickets issued, $25 for the third and $50 for the fourth and any subsequent ticket within a 12-month period.

Tickets will still be allowed to be challenged in municipal court and the person will not have to pay the ticket if the court date comes after the initial 14-day period.

“This kind of makes it streamlined,” Oxford parking director Matt Davis said during Monday’s meeting. “It doesn’t confuse the customer at all.”

The change also affects tickets issued on Ole Miss home football game days. Under the new ordinance, any tickets issued on game days and paid within 14 days come with a $50 fine. Any game day tickets paid after the first two weeks will be a fine of $100.

The maximum fine for any violation under the new ordinance is $200, as determined by the municipal court.
