After three days of a decreased number in reported coronavirus cases, Mississippi has seen its numbers rise for two straight days.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported two new cases in Lafayette County as of 6 p.m. on Thursday, bringing its total to 83 cases since March 19. There were six new cases reported at a Lafayette County long-term care facility, bringing that total to 16.

Lafayette County reported 19 new cases between Monday and Friday, including 11 on Thursday. Active cases are now being tracked in Lafayette County. As of April 22, Oxford emergency management director Jimmy Allgood said there were 45 active COVID-19 cases in the county. They are tracking from when cases were first reported and counting 15 days, which is the projected time period when people should have either recovered from or died due to complications with the coronavirus.

According to Allgood’s chart, 26 cases had rolled off as of April 22. Cases at a long-term care facility are subtracted out, since those cases are not out in the community on a daily basis.

Several North Mississippi counties could see an increase in new cases next week, following Friday’s drive-thru testing that took place at the Oxford Conference Center.

Mississippi reported 281 new cases on Friday, bringing the state’s total to 5,434 cases since March 11. There were eight new deaths reported on Friday, increasing Mississippi’s total to 209.
