Published 9:58 am Thursday, May 23, 2019

Hubert D. Owens, 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Panola Medical Center in Batesville, Mississippi, on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.  He was a victim of Alzheimer’s disease and had gradually declined over the past three years, but thankfully remained physically active until the last three weeks of his life.

Mr. Owens was a long-time resident of Taylor, having spent the last half of his life there. He was born in Fayette, Alabama on February 6, 1939, as the youngest son of Alonzo Jefferson Owens and Georgia Anne Owens. Mr. Owens joined the US Army after high school and served his country for two years. His service included being stationed in West Germany during the Kennedy administration. Mr. Owens then embarked on a

30-year career in education after attending Delta Community College and Mississippi State University. Beginning first with a teaching assignment in Belzoni, he spent the last 23 years of his career at the Business and Industrial Complex teaching industrial arts for both the Lafayette County and Oxford school districts. His metal trades students there were his pride and joy. Seeing his students succeed in life rewarded him greatly. Mr. Owens was active in the Baptist faith, and enjoyed his many years as a member of Anchor Baptist Church.  Preceding Mr. Owens in death were his parents and two older brothers, George Lee Owens and Lon J. Owens.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna, with whom he had celebrated 55 years of marriage earlier this year. Also surviving is a dear and close sister, Loretta Owens of Oxford, Mississippi, and many dear and loving nieces and nephews.

Waller Funeral Home of Oxford has been entrusted with the arrangements and services will be held at Anchor Baptist Church on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Anchor Cemetery. Family will have visitation at the church beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, and they encourage those that may wish to commemorate Mr. Owens’ memory to do so by donating to the Anchor Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1009 Hwy. 7 S., Water Valley, MS 38965.
