The day of the Kentucky Derby, the United Way held their fundraiser Juleps and Jockeys and while it may have been raining at the event itself, the weather was sunny here in Oxford. Over the course of four hours, the organization was able to raise $40,000.

The biggest prize of the day was donated by Cannon Motors of Mississippi: a trip for 10 people to the Keeneland Racecourse VIP box that is usually reserved for world leaders attending the races. In addition, the highest bidder got VIP access to the Paddock, a VIP tour of Woodford Reserve, a VIP behind the scenes tour of Ashford Stud Farm (home of the famous horse American Pharaoh) and VIP tour and to the fall edition of the Fasiq Tipton thoroughbred sale. The trip sold for $25,000.

Oxonians who attended wore their finest derby hats and attire. Laura Sale won the women’s competition for Best Derby Hat while Quentin Whitwell was named the Best Dressed Gentleman.

“The weather was perfect unlike the weather at the Churchill Downs,” said Kathy Williams, the associate director of the United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County. “Attendees enjoyed sipping on mint juleps and ‘Honeysuckle Derbies’ while betting on the races. Because of everyone’s generosity, we are able to impact so many lives and meet additional needs in our community.  A donation to United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County is truly an investment in our community.”

Williams added that Brian Vonderheide, the general manager at Cannon Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick, was instrumental in putting together the Keeneland package.

Moving forward, the United Way plans to make Juleps and Jockeys and annual event.
