Chasity Nicole is a mother of two and Mississippi State University Bulldog alumni and fan. More recently, she’s donned a cape and has become a toothpick-eating superhero.

Nicole, 28, spent most of Sunday on the Square filming this year’s Oxford Film Festival Community Film, “Firemax,” that will be aired during the festival in February and was written by University of Mississippi professor Rory Ledbetter

The film features all local actors, including Nicole who is no stranger to the stage or camera.

The movie is about a superhero who must save Oxford from villains. A light-hearted comedy, the movie is family friendly. Nicole plays the sassy superhero, Ajax.

“I was really excited to play the role,” Nicole said Sunday after filming. “I’ve been everything but a superhero, so I’m really grateful to the directors for choosing me.”

Nicole said she caught the acting bug early in life from her father, who is an actor in Chicago.

“I’ve done many things from plays, musicals to more recently, film,” she said. “I definitely hope to make this a full-time thing. It’s my No. 1 focus at this time.”

As a young child, Nicole said she would often put on plays for her family and friends.

“My granny still tells me I hog the camera,” she said.

She enjoys writing and is mother to John and Morgan, a dog named Phoenix and a cat named Cally.

The Oxford Film Festival will be held Feb. 15-19.

More extras needed

The community film needs more community. Those who want to get involved in seeing how a film is made by being an extra in the movie still have time to take part in “Firemax.”

Extras will be part of a scene on the Courthouse Lawn on Saturday with filming at 9 a.m. and ending before noon. Extras must wear comfortable clothes that they would wear to an arts fair and clothing should have no logos on them.

Check in on Saturday will be at the Shelter on Van Buren beginning at 8 a.m. and no later than 8:30 a.m.

Artists are also needed to take part to showcase their art in the fair. Contact Melanie Addington if your artwork could be loaned for the scene.

The movie will premier at the festival on Feb. 15.
