Heather Thomas Peters of Oxford has pled guilty to embezzlement and was sentenced to seven years in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, five years suspended, and two years to serve, according to the state auditor’s office. Additionally, she was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $25,981.43.

Peters was arrested in March of last year by special agents from the state auditor’s office on charges of embezzling public funds. She was also served with a civil demand in the amount of $8,002.97.

The former Lafayette County employee embezzled almost $1,800 from the District Attorney’s Bad Check Unit, and charged another $2,000 on a government Wal-Mart credit card.

“I’d like to thank Lafayette County District Attorney, Ben Creekmore, for referring this case to us after an internal audit, and De Soto County District Attorney, John Champion, for handling the prosecution,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering. “Both attorneys have handled this case in the utmost professional manner.”
