Moving history

Wortham Construction workers begin the process to move the Skipwith Cottage from the Square to a spot across from the Lafayette County & Oxford Library in Oxford near the Skate Park.

The cottage was sitting on top of the roof of what was the RSVP office. Due to mold and leaks from the roof, city officials said the cottage had to be moved so repairs can be made and RSVP can move back.

The cottage once sat on the property of what came to be known as the Skipwith House, which was torn down in 1974. The new location was selected by the Historic Properties Commission for its visibility and expected use by the library for children’s programs. The house also can be rented through the commission for small meetings. The city approved spending $60,000 to move the cottage and recently plans were approved to make the area a breezeway and sitting area until a permanent plan for the site is selected.
