Breaking news, breaking down to screen Monday

OXFORD TOWN – For the people who tell the stories of other’s tragedies for the world to understand, we often forget that their own experiences of those events are as telling, if not more. While a journalist is trained to remain detached and record the events, in the midst of catastrophe, there are sights and experiences that alter you.
“Breaking News, Breaking Down,” is a 36-minute documentary that looks at the journalists behind the words and cameras during Hurricane Katrina and September 11. The film will play in Oxford on Monday, April 12 at 4 p.m. in the Overby Auditorium, next to Farley Hall on the Ole Miss campus.

Hot Tub Time Machine takes us back

OXFORD TOWN – There is something to be said for a film that knows not to take itself or its story too seriously. “Hot Tub Time Machine” is one of those films and takes us back in time with fun 80s movie clichés blended with a time travel story. Thanks to the homage to 80s films, it is hard not to go back to the theater at least twice with friends to see this film, maybe break into song, and to try and catch what you may have missed the first time. (March 25, 2010, Page 15)

Counting college students complicated

Oxford and other college towns have a vested interest in making sure students fill out their census forms by April 1.
The number of students living in a county helps determine the number of seats in Congress a state might have, how many federal dollars can be funneled to a state and its communities, and how much student loan money is doled out.
But, as Oxford and University of Mississippi officials are well aware, obtaining an accurate student head count is no easy task.

Indie film to shoot in Oxford

OXFORD TOWN — An independent film will be shot in Oxford this May with casting for several speaking roles to be held on March 27. The film 25K follows the misadventures of two bail enforcement agents who make a series of bad decisions with violent consequences.
For filmmaker Chase Goforth, his two passions grew hand in hand. While his career is that of a magician, doing work at corporate events, conferences and some theater work, another type of magic always fascinated him: movie-making.

Square too flashy?

The Oxford Planning Commission approved Monday a change in the city’s sign regulations that could soon lead to fewer neon signs and banners on the Square, if the change is approved by the Oxford Board of Aldermen.

UM launches Violence Prevention Office

The University of Mississippi recently created the Violence Prevention Office to educate and, hopefully, reduce and prevent incidences of sexual assault, date violence and stalking. The new office received $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice to help fund its operations, Coordinator Linda Abbott told members of the UM Faculty Senate on Tuesday.

Fire rips through old Gin

Oxford firefighters battled a blaze that ripped through The Gin Saturday night.

Customers at Frank and Marlee’s Restaurant and Piano Bar smelled smoke at about 9:15 p.m. Soon, flames began to shoot out of The Gin, which is adjacent to Frank and Marlee’s just off the Square. The two establishments shared a common wood patio up until Thursday, according to co-owner Erin Smith.
