Jim Dees

It just bees that way sometimes

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – My buddy, Gerund, dropped by this week with a bumblebee sting that had swelled his face up into a catcher’s mitt. He asked for a beer and when I gave him one he could barely part his pillow lips to allow in the delicious nectar. He looked like Angeline Jolie with a hangover. Oxford Town columnist Jim Dees and the boys attempt to film bees this week at great personal risk. Check out the hilarity in this issue of Oxford Town. (April 8, 2010, Page 6)

Cockleburs: A Secret Life

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – Oxford Town columnist Jim Dees takes a look into the magic world of cockleburs, tracing their history and giving you some information about them that’s just fitting for the first of April (April 1, 2010, Page 6)

Spring of our Discontent

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – A helpful suggestion for the contentment impaired might be no further than their own backyards (speaking of course of the backyard fire). Out in Eden, Jim Dees and his friends look on early spring as pyro-thirty. It’s amazing how gathering with friends around a fire can inspire and help solve the problems of the world … but it happens. (March 25, 2010, Page 6)

Surf’s Down; Hook, line and stinker

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS — Jim Dees and his buddies Truck and Key Zanzibar decided the best way to spend one of the last nice days of summer last year was to visit Sardis lake for some serious fishing and fun … mostly fun. What started as an innocent day of fishing quickly turned into a fiasco with an audience after too many beers and too few sets of clothing that the boys somehow managed to shed. Check out Dees’ weekly recollection of this bizarre fishing trip and decide for yourself: Lie or Truth. Who knows? (March 18, 2010, Page 7)

Spring Break in Haiti — Back at the voodoo shed…

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS — Going to Haiti on spring break sporting a Speedo may not be the best of ideas these days – but it happens. Oxford Town columnist Jim Dees tackles the problem head-on this week as a friend of his, Burke Murkee, is determined to visit the ravaged country …  with Speedo in tow. The Devil wears Speedo and voodoo runs amok in this wild chapter of Dees’ very active imagination. (March 11, 2010, Page 8)

Stranger comes to town; Captain to the Maximus

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – Jim Dees developed a close, personal relationship with Barry Hannah at the Hoka, Oxford’s tin-roof cinema, in early 1982. That relationship endured over the years up until Hannah’s untimely passing on Monday. Read about their unique relationship as well as years of Hannah-isms and quotes from admirers worldwide. “Reading him made you proud to know him.” (March 4, 2010, Page 8)

Lies and Other Truths: Sorry state of affairs – Cheap talk getting cheaper

OXFORD TOWN – Jim Dees examines the art of apologizing, the abundance of it in our society and two of today’s worst offenders; Toyota and Tiger Woods. (February 25, 2010, Page 9)
