Second man guilty in beating death

Adam Cory Ferguson was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the murder of Lafayette County resident Derald “Pete” Connell during the January court term at the Lafayette County Circuit Court. ‘Biggest Loser’ wins over crowd with success story

About 150 people listened to Vicksburg native Patrick House’s story of how he managed to get on The Biggest Loser show last year and win the entire competition, losing 156 pounds during a motivational lecture last night at the North Oxford Baptist Church. The program was one of several events planned for the free, health initiative Healthy You, Healthy L.O.U., sponsored by Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. (February 4, 2011, Page 1A)

Lafayette’s population booms

Data released this week from the U.S. Census shows Lafayette County as being the fastest growing nonmetropolitan area in Mississippi with a 22.2 percent increase of population since 2000. The city of Oxford also grew over the last 10 years going from the 35th biggest city in the state to the 20th biggest city. (February 4, 2011, Page 1A)

Veterans Park closer to fundraising goal

The VFW, American Legion, Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans have been holding several fundraisers over the past year to raise money toward building the park that will be located on Veterans Boulevard, across from the Veterans State Home. So far, a pavilion with bathrooms has been constructed. The land has been cleared and lights have been installed along with some benches. Fundraising efforts continue with an upcoming Valentine’s Day raffle. (February 3, 2011, Page 2)

Meeting the people he serves

With only four weeks in office, U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee has spent the last several days  traveling around north Mississippi. On Wednesday, he stopped in Oxford where he met with Mayor Pat Patterson and the Board of Aldermen, the Lafayette County Supervisors and other county employees and stopped off and had lunch with the Oxford Kiwanis Club. Later, he visited with the staff at the Oxford EAGLE and answered questions about industry, health care, jobs, education and Social Security and talked about his first month in office. (February 3, 2011, Page 1)

While Mike Tagert of Starkville won the overall election in Tuesday’s run-off race for the Northern District Transportation Commissioner seat, local voters chose John Caldwell Sr. of Nesbit. (February 2, 2011, Page 1)

The attorney representing Caleb Corrothers, who accused of killing a Lafayette County father and son in 2009, has filed numerous pretrial motions, including a request to move the trial out of Lafayette County. (February 2, 2011, Page 2)

Panty thief sparks sex crime bill

Local legislators are working to pass a new bill that would require prosecutors to include a special allegation of sexual motivation in felony criminal cases when sufficient evidence exists to justify a finding of sexual motivation. If convicted, the defendant would be required to register under the Mississippi sex offender registration law. (February 1, 2011, Page 1)
