H.W. Byers blanks Devils in region match

Water Valley volleyball coach Casey Clouse knew this season would be one filled with growing pains for her young team. Thursday night was more of that as the Blue Devils were swept by H.W. Byers 3-0 (25-27, 14-25, 10-25) inside the Water Valley High School multipurpose building. (September 19, 2014, Page 6)

Pearson makes all the plays and more for OHS

Jessica Pearson always had a knack of turning nothing into something.

As the setter on Oxford’s volleyball team, it wasn’t uncommon to see Pearson not only set up a teammate for the kill when the Lady Chargers’ passing was on point, but also go sprawling out of bounds in an attempt to keep the play alive. (more…) (October 25, 2012, Page 1B)

      Lady ‘Dores complete season sweep

The Lafayette volleyball team earned a season sweep of Region 2 rival Water Valley Tuesday with a convincing 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-11) victory at the LHS gym.

Tuesday’s match was a far cry from Lafayette’s Aug. 29 performance at Water Valley in which the Lady Commodores were forced to regroup several times in order to pull out the sweep. (more…) (September 19, 2012, Page 7)

Lady ‘Dores gain steam in win at WV

WATER VALLEY — Monday’s volleyball match was definitely a struggle for the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils and the visiting Lafayette Lady Commodores.

Early on, both squads struggled to serve consistently and make the basic plays necessary to build a lead.

As the match progressed, however, Lafayette made the necessary adjustments to claim a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-11) victory at Water Valley. (August 28, 2012, Page 7)

Versatile Smith took her game to another level

Heading into this season Lafayette volleyball coach Rachel Wenzel was faced with a rather large problem: How could the Lady Commodores replace the production and leadership that left along with the graduated senior class?

She knew it would be no easy task, but senior middle blocker Ashley Smith went to Wenzel and requested that her coach trust her enough to allow her to play all the way around, rather than be substituted in the back row. (more…) (October 26, 2011, Page 1B)

              Lafayette downs improved Lady Devils

WATER VALLEY — The Water Valley volleyball team has showed marked improvement over the course of the last two weeks.

After being over-powered on Aug. 25 at Lafayette, the Lady Blue Devils played a competitive match in the return trip on Thursday, falling to the Lady Commodores 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21).

Even if the end result was still a loss, it was obvious at Water Valley’s auxiliary gym that the Lady Blue Devils have made significant strides as a team under first-year coach Casey Clouse. (September 9, 2011, Page 8A)

While Oxford opens its season this weekend in Jackson at the Set It Off Challenge, Lafayette and Water Valley begin on Tuesday.
