ITTA BENA — The Water Valley Blue Devils ran into a buzzsaw in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs Tuesday.
Water Valley’s varsity basketball teams will play in the Division 2-3A tournament at Aberdeen on Tuesday. The Blue Devils, the No. 4 seed, take on Mantachie at 5:30 p.m., while the Lady Blue Devils, the No. 6 seed, will follow against South Pontotoc at 7. The winners advance to play on Thursday. An lead in the first quarter wasn’t enough to propel the Water Valley Blue Devils to a win over Houlka in the annual Hotbed Classic in New Albany.
Houlka ended up defeating the Blue Devils 50-39 after outscoring them 24-13 in the fourth quarter. C.J. Jackson led WVHS with 18 points, while E.J. Bounds scored nine points. The 5-10 Blue Devils returned to action tonight at Nettleton. (January 24, 2012, Page 9)

COFFEEVILLE — Turnovers were at the forefront of Water Valley’s doubleheader loss at county rival Coffeeville on Friday.
