Water Valley football

This year’s All-Area team best I’ve seen

This season’s EAGLE All-Area football team was released in Thursday’s sports section. Unfortunately for me, space prevented me from writing a column that would appear next to the story on the back page.

So instead of it appearing on Thursday, I thought sharing my opinion on this year’s team was important.

For those who may have missed the players who made the team, Lafayette junior running back Demarkus Dennis was named Player of the Year, while another 11 Commodores who helped the school win the Class 4A state title made the first-team squad. Three other LHS players were named honorable mention.

Oxford had seven players on this year’s team, while Water Valley had five. Both the Chargers and Blue Devils each had three players receive honorable mention status. (December 17, 2010, Page 6A)

Lafayette’s D. Dennis runs away with top honor

Teams that win championships always have great players leading the way. In the case of the Lafayette Commodores, there were a handful of players that stood out above the rest on a team that was filled from top to bottom with solid high school athletes. (more…) (December 16, 2010, Page 1B)

Several Blue Devils make MAC 3A Team

Several Water Valley Blue Devils were honored on Wednesday for their standout play on the football field.

Included on the 2010 Mississippi Association of Coaches’ Class 3A All-State Team were first teamers, linebacker J.D. Fondon, safety/running back Eric Buckley and long snapper Fred McGee. Cornerback/receiver Chris Conard was named to the second team, while linebacker C.J. Jackson, lineman Tommy Lipscomb and punter John Michael Grimmett were named as honorable mentions. (December 9, 2010, Page 6)

        Mistakes end Blue Devils’ playoffs

All season the Water Valley Blue Devils had been a team that made the most of opportunities and cashed in on other team’s mistakes.

Friday night, it was the Winona Tigers that capitalized on the Blue Devils mistakes that led to a hard-fought 10-7 win in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs at Bobby Clark Field. (November 22, 2010, Page 4B)

Water Valley’s pride has been restored

Friday’s loss to Winona may have been an emotional one for many of the Blue Devils, but in the grand scheme of things, it was a sign of a big step in the right direction for a program that went from 2-8-1 just four seasons ago to 11-3 this year. (more…) (November 22, 2010, Page 4B)

BLOG: Mistakes doom WVHS in loss to Winona

Two muffed punts, several crucial dropped passes and a slew of penalties ultimately did the Water Valley Blue Devils in on Friday night at Bobby Clark Field. (more…) (November 20, 2010)

Water Valley looking forward to facing Winona Tigers

The manner in which Water Valley defensive coordinator Richard Russo answered the phone on Tuesday pretty much sums up the Water Valley Blue Devils’ attitude regarding its game with region 2-3A foe Winona on Friday in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)

Ruleville Central no match for Blue Devils second round matchup

The Water Valley Blue Devils continued their playoff success with a convincing road victory over the Ruleville Tigers 31-0 in the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs. (November 15, 2010, Page 6B)
