WATER VALLEY — Skyler Defer has played all over the field for Water Valley’s baseball team the last two seasons, but the rising senior is going to the next level for one reason. Defer signed with Northeast Mississippi Community College on Thursday. He’s seen time in the outfield, at first base and on the pitcher’s mound for the Blue Devils since he joined the varsity team as a sophomore, but the Tigers want him for his arm. Oxford High School right-hander Houston Roth was a sophomore who pitched like a seasoned veteran during the Chargers’ run to a North Half runner-up finish, and that performance earned him the Oxford EAGLE Player of the Year award for the 2014 season. (June 17, 2014, Page 1B)
