Local students show patriotism in essay contest
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and local veteran organizations honored the winners in this year’s Voice of Democracy Speech competition for high school students and the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest for middle school students Tuesday night at an awards ceremony. Veterans Park closer to fundraising goal
The VFW, American Legion, Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans have been holding several fundraisers over the past year to raise money toward building the park that will be located on Veterans Boulevard, across from the Veterans State Home. So far, a pavilion with bathrooms has been constructed. The land has been cleared and lights have been installed along with some benches. Fundraising efforts continue with an upcoming Valentine’s Day raffle. (February 3, 2011, Page 2)
Vets honored at ceremony

The annual Veterans Day ceremony, held at the National Guard Armory Thursday, started off with patriotic music supplied by the Oxford Middle School Band, under the direction of Marsha Morgan, Len Killough and Jared Brownlee.
Jeff Bruce, chaplain of the American Legion Post 55, gave the invocation, and Lloyd Oliphant, president of the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors, welcomed the crowd. (November 12, 2010, Page 1A)
