Veterans Park opens Saturday

After almost three years of fundraising, local veteran associations will be officially opening the Veterans Memorial Park this Saturday at 10 a.m. during a dedication ceremony. (June 25, 2012, Page 1, 8)

      Veterans Park closer to fundraising goal

      The VFW, American Legion, Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans have been holding several fundraisers over the past year to raise money toward building the park that will be located on Veterans Boulevard, across from the Veterans State Home. So far, a pavilion with bathrooms has been constructed. The land has been cleared and lights have been installed along with some benches. Fundraising efforts continue with an upcoming Valentine’s Day raffle. (February 3, 2011, Page 2)

          Boy Scout builds fence for veterans

          John-Ray Sockwell, 16, has spent the past four months building a fence around the new Veteran’s Memorial Park on Veterans Boulevard. The project was part of his efforts to be named an Eagle Scout. (November 8, 2010, Page 1A)

            Poker Run to raise funds for veterans park

            Local vets are hoping hundreds come out next month wearing their best poker faces and geared up for a full-day of fun.

            The Veterans of Foreign War Clubs from Southaven and Oxford are sponsoring a Poker Run on Sept. 11 that will take motorcycle riders from Oxford to Holly Springs to Southaven to Hernando and back to Oxford.

            Funds raised during the event will benefit the new Veterans Memorial Park in Oxford. (August 30, 2010, Page 3A)

              Veterans Memorial Park shapes up

              A park is taking shape thanks to the help of the city of Oxford. The Veterans Memorial Park is beginning to take shape as Bennett Construction crews have been placing curbing along the street. The addition of sidewalks next week will make it easier to walk  from the State Veterans Home, past the new park and down the hill to the Veterans Building. (July 9, 2010, Page 1A)
