Rebels face tough task of winning at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt’s Memorial Coliseum is not an ideal arena for a visiting team to have to earn its first league win of the season, but that is the goal of the Ole Miss Rebels, who are in dire need of something positive.

Tipoff in Nashville, Tenn., is set for 8 tonight and the game can be seen locally on CSS (Metrocast Channel 68) with Dave Baker handling the play-by-play and Barry Booker adding the color analysis. Tonight’s game can also be heard locally on 93.7 and 105.5 FM with David Kellum handling the play-by-play. (January 19, 2011, Page 6)

Rebels overcome early woes, down VU

The first half of Sunday’s game between the Ole Miss women and Vanderbilt had all the makings of a letdown reminiscent of the Lady Rebels’ lopsided loss to Miami (Fla.) in mid-December, where 29 turnovers led to 33 points for the Lady Canes.

On Sunday, 14 turnovers led to 15 points for Vanderbilt and by halftime, the Lady Rebels trailed by 16 points.

Following a spirited halftime speech by head coach Renee Ladner, however, the Lady Rebels flipped the switch and an 11-4 run eventually led to a 72-67 victory for Ole Miss in its Southeastern Conference opener at the C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum. (January 3, 2011, Page 7)

The Ole Miss women’s basketball team didn’t waste any time getting its first Southeastern Conference win.

Overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit, the Lady Rebels came from behind to top Vanderbilt 72-67 at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum in its SEC opener today. (more…) (January 2, 2011)

‘Dores take advantage of Rebel miscues in win

Missed assignments, general miscues and turnovers continued to plague the Ole Miss Rebels at the most important times of their 28-14 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The Rebels (1-2 overall, 0-1 in the Southeastern Conference) lost their second home game of the season by playing unsound football at the most critical times of the game. Instead of jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter on a wide-open pass play, the Rebels, and more specifically tight end Ferbia Allen, found a way to let the opportunity drop through their fingers.

Rebels short on intangibles this year

It may not be quite time to hit the panic button for the Ole Miss Rebels, but the situation they find themselves in is far, far from ideal.

No team wants to lose its first two home games of the season especially in the manner the Rebels have done so. General miscues, which include missed assignments and turnovers, continued to hurt a team that is less talented than the first two coach Houston Nutt has led. (more…) (September 20, 2010, Page 1B)

Rebel offensive line continues to deal with shuffled lineup

Ole Miss’ offensive line continued to have its struggles in Saturday’s 28-14 loss to Vanderbilt at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The line was unable to gain a consistent push on short yardage plays in the first half which led to another shuffle in personnel. Redshirt freshman Michael Brown started the game at right guard but he was replaced in the second quarter by junior Logan Clair.

Offensive line coach Mike Markuson, who also serves as the team’s co-offensive coordinator, said he was planning to play both Brown and Clair and that after Brown gave up a sack, he thought it was time to make a change. (September 20, 2010, Page 2B)

‘Business trip’ pays off for Caldwell, Commodores

Prior to Robbie Caldwell’s postgame press conference Saturday the first-year Vanderbilt coach felt compelled to apologize for being drenched, although none was needed.

With seconds remaining in Vanderbilt’s 28-14 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday, Caldwell was doused by senior defensive tackle Adam Smotherman with a cooler full of Gatorade.

Davis looking for big gains from OM backs

In Ole Miss’ offense under Houston Nutt, running backs have to learn to share.

All-Americans Darren McFadden and Felix Jones had to do it at Arkansas and now Enrique Davis, a former prep star, is learning how to do it.

While Davis was a standout in high school and at prep school, he admitted on Monday that he wasn’t surprised when he got to Ole Miss and found out that he would be one of several running backs to get carries.

The committee approach is something Davis said he has come to appreciate and understand. (September 17, 2010, Page 6A)
