    Letters to the Editor

Joel Miller writes to say he was not surprised that no alcohol-related problems were reported in connection with Father’s Dale sales and to add that alcohol sales should be a part of, but not the sole reason, for opening on Sundays. Brandy Rucker writes on behalf of the Oxford Juneteenth Committee to thank all of the businesses and individuals who helped make the annual event a big success. (June 23, 2011, Page 4)

        Sunday alcohol sales a success

Between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday most businesses that chose to open saw steady customers, especially around the Square. There was little police incident to report and businesses said they saw a modest profit. (May 9, 2011, Page 1A)

              Board OKs Sunday alcohol sales

While the Board of Aldermen approved Sunday alcohol sales for on-premise permit holders on Tuesday, supporters should wait to pop the cork to celebrate until Mayor Pat Patterson decides if he will veto the issue. If he does not, than the city must wait for state approval. The board also heard the first reading of an ordinance amendment allowing Sunday off-premise sales from noon to 6 p.m. which means beer and light wine could be sold at convenience stores. The mayor promised to veto the issue if passed. (December 8, 2010, Page 1)

Along with requesting sales at local restuarants, the task force suggested allowing off-premise sales at convenience stores. The suggestions will be given to the Board of Aldermen at their Oct. 19 meeting. (October 8, 2010, Page 1, 9A)
