    Rebels concentrate on position work

    Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze had his Rebels concentrate on position work Wednesday as they continue preparations for next Thursday’s season opener at Vanderbilt. Freeze also talked about the health of his football team, some of the younger players and next year’s early-season schedule. (August 22, 2013, Page 6)

      Chargers kick off with defending MAIS champs

      No one can ever accuse OHS coach Johnny Hill and the Chargers of taking it easy in pre-region games. This season, Oxford opens with defending MAIS champ Jackson Prep and follows with MHSAA Class 5A champion Starkville, a very athletic Cleveland East Side team and Class 4A power and crosstown rival Lafayette. This week, all of the attention turns to getting better against a deep and talented Prep team in a public school-private school matchup at Bobby Holcomb Field. (August 22, 2013, Page 6)

        Blue Devils ready for tough road opener

        Water Valley football coach Brad Embry is pleased with the progress his program has made and said that the Blue Devils are ready to take on larger classification schools in early games in an effort to get better as the season goes along. The Blue Devils travel to Class 4A New Albany this Friday night. (August 22, 2013, Page 7)

          Commodores open with road game against Class 6A Tupelo

          The Lafayette Commodores open their 2013 season on the road Friday against a Class 6A foe when they travel to Tupelo. It’s a good test for the Commodores, LHS coach Eric Robertson said, and the Golden Wave will look familiar even with a new coach since he’s former Water Valley coach Trent Hammond. (August 22, 2013, Page 6)

            Roundball Rebs’ schedule set for 2013-14

            With the Southeastern Conference finalizing its schedule for the upcoming season, SEC schools, including Ole Miss, were able to release their 2013-14 men’s basketball schedules. Dates and TV appearances are set for the Rebels, who are the defending SEC Tournament champions. (August 21, 2013, Page 8)

              Howell, Kollmeyer to host interaction/feedback show

              Ole Miss football fans looking to get more involved and more knowledgeable about their team and its games will have that chance this season with former UM assistant coach and longtime radio personality Max Howell teaming up with longtime area TV sports anchor Will Kollmeyer to host a live production during Rebel games called “Coaches’ Cabana.” (August 21, 2013, Page 8)

                    Tuesday’s local sports briefs include:

                    – Ben Hubbard made a hole-in-one at the recent Oxford Lady Charger Softball Benefit golf tourney played at the Country Club of Oxford

                    – ESPN announced Monday it plans to televise Ole Miss basketball games against Kentucky and Oregon this season.

                    – Ole Miss has promoted Lady Rebel assistant tennis coach Jason Ontog to associate head coach.

                    – Registration is open for the fifth annual Lafayette Commodore Baseball Golf Tournament set for Sept. 14. (August 20, 2013, Page 7)
