Chargers working with less experience this year
Experience is something Oxford High boys basketball coach Drew Tyler has always had working for him during his previous 13 years. No matter how many players graduated from the super successful program, Tyler was always able to reload and move forward.
But for the first time in recent memory, Tyler will rely on several inexperienced players to win games on the court. Oxford, which opens its season Monday at home against Potts Camp, has four seniors and six juniors listed on its roster, but only three have played substantial varsity minutes, a fact that makes Tyler call the 2010-11 season more of a rebuilding season than one where he reloads. Lady Chargers ‘all about team ball’ this year
Head coach Shayne Linzy doesn’t look at his Oxford Lady Chargers’ roster and see just five starters with a handful of role players.
Linzy, in his second year at Oxford since coming over from Water Valley, said he’s excited about how his roster has shaped up since the summer.
With Linzy’s high-tempo offense, in combination with a deep roster, don’t be surprised to see Oxford essentially using hockey-like line changes this season.
That’s a luxury Linzy loves about his squad. (November 3, 2010, Page 6)
Phillips-led Lady Devils looking for improvement
The Water Valley Lady Blue Devils basketball team is hoping to take the program to another level heading into their second year under coach Jason Purdy.
It’s because of what Purdy has seen during preseason practices that he believes the Lady Blue Devils can take a step in the right direction to improve upon last season, which ended with a first-round loss in the playoffs. (November 3, 2010, Page 6)
