Freeze pleased with first class of players
Ole Miss’ final verbal commitment, and subsequent letter of intent, of the 2012 football signing class made the biggest impact Wednesday for first-year coach Hugh Freeze and his staff.
As highly rated and needed as Aberdeen defensive end Channing Ward is to the signing class, Oxford, Ala., Trae Elston (6-foot, 183 pounds) coming on board Wednesday and picking the Rebels over LSU and Oklahoma State live on ESPNU from his high school helped finish out Freeze’s first class in style. Hugh Freeze turned the corner, walked into the Indoor Practice Facility’s team meeting room, stepped in front of the podium to face the media and took a deep breath.

LSU’s Miles raves about Liggins’ ability as a QB
LSU football coach Les Miles wasn’t on the Square on Monday night when his newest quarterback signee, Lafayette’s Jeremy Liggins, made it public that he was going to be a Tiger. But the veteran coach who won the 2007 BCS championship and this year’s Southeastern Conference title said Wednesday during his post signing day press conference that he gained even more respect for Liggins for how he announced his decision. Freeze garners 11 new signatures Wednesday
Hugh Freeze’s first football signing class wasn’t big on numbers, but it did include some important players for the future of the program. By the Oxford EAGLE’s press time at 10:15 a.m., Ole Miss received a total of 11 National Letters of Intent from players across the state and region. Four players — quarterback Bo Wallace, defensive back Dehendret Collins, offensive lineman Darone Bailey and offensive lineman Pierce Burton — already signed scholarship papers and are enrolled in the spring semester. ‘Dores Liggins makes his call for LSU
Mardi Gras started a little early in Oxford on Monday night when Lafayette High quarterback Jeremy Liggins chose to play for the LSU Tigers and coach Les Miles. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound EAGLE Player of the Year in 2009 and 2011 picked the defending Southeastern Conference champions over Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama and Auburn on the Sports Roundup’s Commitment Show held at Irie on the Square. QB Beathard flips to Iowa; Judon switches to football
C.J. Beathard said Monday the fit just didn’t seem right anymore.

It’s a good thing Anthony Hart has gone from being Lafayette’s head football coach to athletics director. Now he will have more time on his hands to take in community college football games across the state considering the rosters will be filled with a bevy of his former players. OHS Chargers trio picks Northwest
Oxford’s talented trio of seniors will be able to call one another teammates for at least another two seasons.

Conard, Jackson headed to Itawamba C.C.
After putting on a show for four years at Water Valley’s Death Valley, the hard-hitting Blue Devil duo of Chris Conard and C.J. Jackson announced in front of a packed house at Irie on the Square on Monday that they would be taking their abilities to Itawamba Community College.
