Education funding hinges on ballot box

Thousands and thousands of Mississippians have signed petitions to place a referendum on the ballot in 2015 that would require complete funding of MAEP. That’s the first step; now we have to see how many people will go to the polls and vote for something that might raise their taxes or cut other services they want, too. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the issue which serves a good purpose — the education of our children — but promises to bring more discussion before it’s all said and done. (October 12, 2014, Page 4A)

    City continues to ponder budget

    To build two new roads and a new activity center, a financial adviser told the Oxford Board of Aldermen Monday the city would need to raise the millage rate by 3.5 mills. (July 22, 2014, Page 1, 3)

      City won’t raise taxes — this year

      The good news for Oxonians coming from City Hall this morning is that the millage rate will not need to be increased to balance the city’s 2013-14 budget. However, that could change next year, according to Mayor Pat Patterson. (August 19, 2013, Page 1A, 3A)
