Prep volleyball set to get going
While the area football teams are braving the blistering heat, the prep volleyball squads are busting their tails in their respective gyms preparing for their season openers. While Oxford opens its season this weekend in Jackson at the Set It Off Challenge, Lafayette and Water Valley begin on Tuesday.
Water Valley will be led by first-year coach Casey Clouse, who admits it could be an interesting first season with the Lady Blue Devils. (August 5, 2011, Page 9A)
Lady ‘Dores finish regular season strong
The Oxford Tri-Match Tournament meant two different things for the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Lady Commodores Thursday evening.
For a young Oxford squad, the tournament meant the end to what has been a difficult season with only one senior.
For Lafayette, the tournament — in which the Lady ‘Dores topped Oxford 2-0 (25-16, 25-11) and Tupelo 2-0 (25-20, 25-20) — was a good warmup for their first-round playoff match on Saturday at Caledonia. (October 1, 2010, Page 6A)
Gators show experience against OHS
Facing the defending state champion Lake Cormorant Lady Gators, the Oxford Lady Chargers volleyball squad could have folded on Thursday after falling behind 14-1 early in Game 1.
Despite eventually losing the match 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-16), Oxford coach Wendy Raby said early on her young team — which has just one senior, as opposed to the 10 on the Lady Gators’ squad — felt intimidated by their opponent. (September 17, 2010, Page 7A)
Alexander shows experience in win
A year ago Ivory Alexander was still finding her way on Oxford High’s volleyball court, still adapting to her teammates and coach Tara Ross’ style.
Against Senatobia at the OHS gym on Tuesday, Alexander’s maturity and athleticism made the difference as the Lady Chargers picked up a 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19) victory.
The junior didn’t just rack up an abundance of kills or blocks, but she helped her team in a number of ways, finishing the match with four kills, two digs and four aces. (August 18, 2010, Page 9)
Lady Chargers head to SHS to open season
A young, but energetic group is what Oxford High volleyball coach Tara Ross has to work with in 2010.
The Lady Chargers take the court tonight at Senatobia before returning home for their home opener on Thursday. Ross only has one senior on this year’s team — Kathryn Stocks — but she has several youngsters that have shown they want to get better and with the proper amount of patience, should be good in the future.
