As the weather heats up in the area, so is the Oxford High tennis team. The Chargers are now just one win away from returning to the Metro Jackson area to play in the MHSAA Class 5A state title match. Oxford hosts Ridgeland in the 5A North Half title match Friday afternoon. (April 26, 2012, Page 6)
Oxford’s Chargers swept through the individual Division 2-5A tennis tournament held Wednesday at the John Leslie Courts. The Chargers qualified all seven spots for next month’s MHSAA individual state tournament.
Every match in the tournament was one-sided in the Chargers’ favor. Saltillo, New Hope and West Point were the other three teams that had individual tennis players competing in the tournament. (April 19, 2012, Page 7)
Avent’s Park was surrounded by spectators Thursday afternoon as Lafayette and Oxford closed out their regular seasons with the annual tennis meeting between the two schools.
With both squads already a part of the Class 4A (LHS) and 5A (OHS) playoffs, Thursday’s match was about different things for each coach.
The Chargers defeated the Commodores 5-2 but the two wins were a marked improvement for Debbie Swindoll’s Commodores, who lost 7-0 to OHS last year.
Apart from the two wins, the No. 1 boys doubles match had to be decided with a tiebreaker, while two other doubles matches were also competitive. (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)
Oxford’s trip to New Hope Monday produced two wins over the Trojans in tennis action. The two 7-0 wins not only improved the Chargers to 13-1 overall, but the victories also wrapped up another regular season division title for the Chargers, who finished 6-0 against West Point, Saltillo and New Hope combined. Oxford earned seven wins in eight junior varsity matches with Pontotoc on Monday. Callan Shinall beat Chet Wilson 6-2, 6-1 in boys singles, while Madison Cobb defeated Molly Chamblee 6-2, 6-1 in girls singles. (more…) (April 3, 2012, Page 9)
