The Oxford Chargers got their 2013 tennis season off to a good start with a 7-0 win over Alcorn Central at Avent Park Tuesday. In boys singles, Quinn Elliott blanked Tayton Smith 6-0, 6-0, while Grace Ann Jones defeated Anna Bowling 6-0, 6-1 in girls singles.
The No. 13 Ole Miss men’s tennis team concluded play at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Sunday, earning five singles wins against players from No. 6 ranked Georgia. Former Oxford High tennis standout Felicity Flesher was honored recently by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for achieving All-Academic status. Flesher currently plays for Carleton College located in Northfield, Minn. Floscher was one of five members of her team to be named to the team. To be recognized as a member of the team, an individual has to have a grade point average of at least 3.5. (August 2, 2012, Page 7)
CLINTON — For anybody who may have ever wondered if Oxford tennis coach Louis Nash could fly the answer is yes. Moments after the Oxford Chargers wrapped up their fifth straight MHSAA tennis championship at Brighton Park, Nash leapt into the air and straight into the arms of senior mixed doubles player Judson Watson, who joined with teammate Cari Hansen to defeat Stone County’s Josh Johnson and Beth Owen 3-6, 6-4 (10-5) in the deciding match of the day. RIDGELAND — It seemed to be hard for members of the Oxford High tennis team to pick a boys doubles team to root for in Tuesday’s Class 5A individual tennis championship. Thanks to a new tournament format created this year by the MHSAA, the Chargers’ two boys doubles team that qualified for the individual tournament faced off against one another in the championship match.
