Former Oxford High standout Nicole Robinson scored in three events to help Delta State win its first conference title since 2001. She finished third in the 1-meter diving finals and 12th in both the 200-yard backstroke and fly. Robinson finished with a total of 26 points, while DSU finished with a total of 942 points. Twenty swimmers from Oxford High advanced to next month’s MHSAA state meet thanks to earning qualifying scores in the 5A-6A North Half state meet this past Saturday in Starkville. Oxford High’s swim teams had another strong showing in recent meet action held at Hartfield Academy in Flowood. The Chargers won six events, including relays, and finished first as a team, while the Lady Chargers finished with three first-place finishes and second overall.
Individual first-place finishers for the Chargers included Dion Kevin in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.32 seconds. Kevin was also second in the 100 with a 53.58. Jack Cutler was first in the 500 free with a time of 5 minutes, 18.39 seconds. He was also third in the 100 free with a 54.59. Kevin Walker finished first in the 100 back with a 1:04.34. Oxford High’s swim teams got off to a successful start as both won first place at the DeSoto County Swim Meet Saturday. The Chargers and Lady Chargers combined to score 298 points, over 130 points more than second-place finisher Lewisburg with 162. Hernando (148), DeSoto Central (129) and Amory (87) rounded out the top five. A total of 11 schools competed in the meet.
The Chargers totaled 160 points, while the Lady Chargers with 138 points. Both squads had several first-place finishers. (September 17, 2012, Page 3B)
Oxford’s successful swimming season came to a conclusion on a high note over the weekend as the girls placed second and boys placed second at the MHSAA Swimming State Championships held at the Delta State University Aquatics Club in Cleveland on Saturday.
The Chargers earned 62 points, while first-place Tupelo earned 138 and second-place Madison Central collected 100.
The Lady Chargers racked up 73 points, while first-place Tupelo earned 144.
Thirty-eight Class 6A and 5A schools participated in the championships.
Oxford took 10 boys and 10 girls to compete in the meet under the current format.
The Lady Chargers were led by Dora Chen, who placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of two minutes, 3.38 seconds and third in the 100-yard freestyle (56.66).
Chen also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cynthia Torma, Hayley Murphy and Sarah Wilson place second (1:48.88) and the 400 free relay team of Torma, Marta Burwell and Grace Orman place second (3:50.52).
Other Lady Chargers who placed were:
-Ashleigh Moore took first in the 200 IM (2:14.81).
-Burwell placed third in the 50 free (25.75) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:26.58).
-Orman placed seventh in the 200 IM (2:27.90) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.93).
-Torma placed fifth in the 50 free (26.86).
-Lizzy Leary placed fifth in the 500 free (5:46.18) and seventh in the 100 back (1:09.04).
-The 200 medley relay team of Burwell, Murphy, Orman and Wilson placed fourth (2:03.09).
The Oxford boys were led by Andrew Mullen, who placed first in the 200 free (1:45.84). He also placed second in the 100 butterfly (52.97) and helped the 400 free relay team of Dion Kevin, Jack Cutler and Chase Gladden place third (3:30.39) and the 200 medly relay team of Taide Ding, Gladden and Brian Clancy place fourth (1:47.90).
Other Chargers who placed were:
-Clancy placed eighth in the 200 IM (2:12.59) and third in the 500-yard free (5:12.88).
-Ding placed seventh in the 100 butterfly (59.84).
-Cutler placed fifth in the 500-yard free (5:15.10).
-Thomas Murphy placed eighth in the 100 back (1:04.11).

CLEVELAND — Oxford’s girls and boys swim teams had a successful trip to the Delta as the two teams took home first place in the Cleveland High School Invite Saturday.
The Oxford swim team had a successful home opener Saturday as both the boys and girls teams placed second out of 17 schools with 106 and 99 points respectively in the Oxford High Invitational held at Oxford’s city pool.
The Oxford High swim team didn’t fool around this past weekend at the North Half Swim Meet hosted by Clinton High, as the Lady Chargers placed first with 328 points and the Chargers placed fourth with 202 points.
Rounding out the top four spots in the girls rankings were Madison Central (255), Tupelo (254) and St. Joseph Catholic (222). On the boys’ side, Tupelo placed first with 446 points, followed by Madison Central (299.5) and St. Joseph Catholic (208). (October 19, 2010, Page 9)
