Tennis complex expansion to be on Tuesday’s agenda
Discussion on the expansion of the John Leslie tennis complex is expected to continue on Tuesday at the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors meeting. The committee that has helped raise awareness for the tennis project was scheduled to be on the board’s agenda. Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the chancery court Building. Tie breaker gives Volleys the win
The Oxford Park Commission’s Volleys defeated the Spinners on Thursday thanks to a tie-breaker (fewest games lost).
The Volleys claimed both singles points thanks to wins by Ryan Mounce and Barrett Childress. The Spinners bounced back in the two doubles matches. Will Carter and Cole Grafton claimed the No. 1 doubles match, while Austin Haynes and Eli Abel combined to claim the second doubles match. (October 15, 2010, Page 7A)
Volleys top Spinners
In the Oxford Park Commission’s Junior Team Tennis League, the Volleys topped the Spinners 3-1. Earning wins for the Volleys in three doubles matches were: Matt Reed and Will Carter, Zacarrah Nelms and Ryan Morgan, and Drew Backstrom and Sadie Wilson.

After splitting four tight matches, it came down to fewest games lost and in the end the Oxford Park Commission junior team tennis’ Volleys defeated the Spinners.
Earning wins for the Volleys were Allie Bowen in the No. 1 singles match, and the duo of Barrett Childress and Drew Backstrom in the No. 2 doubles match. Zacarrah Nelms earned the Spinners’ singles point, while Matt Read and Anne Hardy picked up the doubles point. (September 10, 2010, Page 9A)
Volleys beat spinners in OPC Tennis
The Volleys got their Oxford Park Commission Junior Team Tennis league off to a good start with a 3-1 victory over the Spinners on Thursday.
Earning wins for the Volleys were Sadie Wilson and Ally Shinall in singles matches, and the duo of Will Carter and Austin Haynes in the No. 2 doubles match. The Spinners tandem of Jimmy Green and Anne Hardy won the No. 1 doubles match. (September 3, 2010, Page 10A)
OPC tennis shines at state level
Several individual tennis players from the Oxford and Lafayette County area combined to produce three teams that all fared well in recent USTA team tennis action.
The 12-and-Under team won five matches at the Ridgeland Tennis Center to win the overall team championship. The victory in the final came over a team from Starkville. (July 28, 2010, Page 10)
OPC expansion plan introduced to public
A drive to expand the existing John Leslie Tennis Courts into a one-of-a-kind tennis facility continued Tuesday night with a town hall meeting at the Oxford Conference Center.
Oxford’s vibrant tennis community turned out in force as approximately 200 people watched a video presentation narrated by Oxford Park Commission Executive Director Rob Boyd and supported by a handful of the tennis improvement committee members that have been working on the project for the past eight months. The informational meeting, which included a short question and answer period after the presentation, outlined the master plan of the tennis court expansion to the public for the first time. Spinners top Volleys
