      OHS Chargers trio picks Northwest

      Oxford’s talented trio of seniors will be able to call one another teammates for at least another two seasons.

      During Monday’s announcement show at Irie on the Square, receiver Robert Liggins, defensive lineman K.C. Lamar and running back Mont Dean announced they plan to sign with Northwest Community College on Wednesday. (more…) (January 31, 2012, Page 9)

        Former Charger earns All-Academic status

        Former Oxford High standout Reed Falkner was one of five Delta State athletes who made the 2011 Fall All-Academic team. Each athlete had to carry a 3.2 grade point average or better and be a significant contributor to the team he or she was playing on.

        Falkner, who plays tight end for Delta State, finished with a 3.89 in Biology. Falkner caught three passes for 45 yards and was regarded as one of the best blockers for DSU. (January 18, 2012, Page 6)

          Dean, Smith named to 5A MAC Team

          Oxford senior running back Mont Dean and junior offensive lineman Clifton Smith were named to the second team offense in Class 5A by the Mississippi Association of Coaches Monday. (more…) (December 13, 2011, Page 7)

            Former Charger wins MVP award

            Former Oxford High standout Deantae Smith won the Hubert Tucker Offensive MVP Saturday for his performance in the MACJC Football All-Star Classic. Smith caught three passes for 35 yards and caught the North’s lone touchdown in a 14-8 loss to the South. Smith was the second-straight Ranger to win an MVP award in the game. Last year linebacker Renaldo Buck was named defensive MVP. (December 7, 2011, Page 6)

              Five Rangers to play in all-star game

              Former Oxford High standouts La’Derrick Anderson and wide receiver Deante Smith are two of the five Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers who will be playing in the MACJC All-Star Football Classic. (more…) (December 1, 2011, Page 7)

                MHSAA considering new sites for football championships

                JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi’s high school football championship games could be coming to a stadium — or university — near you.

                The Mississippi High School Activities Association is open to exploring other sites for the organization’s six football title games, which will be played for the 20th straight year this week at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. (more…) (November 29, 2011, Page 7)

                  Clarksdale holds on to beat Oxford, end Chargers’ season

                  The Oxford Chargers’ season was put to rest earlier than head coach Johnny Hill would have liked Friday night with a 20-17 heartbreaking loss to 1-5A foe Clarksdale. In a game of ups and downs for the Chargers, it was the first half that Hill felt really hurt his teams’ chances of winning. (November 7, 2011, Page 6B)

                    Playoffs start for WV, LHS tonight; OHS needs to win

                    All three area football teams officially enter the must-win portion of their respective seasons tonight.

                    While the Lafayette Commodores and Water Valley Blue Devils open their playoff schedules hosting Leake Central and Laflore County, the Oxford Chargers close out their regular season with a win-or-go-home matchup against Clarksdale.

                    All games are set for 7 p.m. (November 4, 2011, Page 10A)
