Hill expects hard-fought Classic
Explosive was the word that Oxford coach Johnny Hill used several times to describe Lafayette’s offense and quarterback Jeremy Liggins earlier this week. Hill’s Chargers have the extremely tough task of trying stop, or at least slow, the potent Commodores, who have scored 83 points the first two weeks against Cleveland and Memphis Trezevant, Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. The last 24 hours have been quite busy for the Ole Miss football program. Instead of focusing solely on the season-opener against Jacksonville State, the Rebels were dealt the news yesterday that quarterback transfer Jeremiah Masoli’s waiver was denied by the NCAA. Oxford, Lafayette split rivalry games
Rivalry week between the Lafayette and Oxford school districts continued Tuesday night with middle school football action at Bobby Holcomb Field.
The Chargers won the seventh-grade game 26-6, while the Commodores took the eighth-grade game in the nightcap 16-0. (September 1, 2010, Page 7)
Crosstown Classic tickets on sale
Tickets for Friday’s annual Crosstown Classic between Lafayette and Oxford are currently on sale at both high schools and University Sporting Goods located on the Oxford Square.
Cost of the tickets are $5. There were 2,000 tickets available for this year’s game that will be played at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford Athletics Director Johnny Hill said that all unsold tickets will be available to spectators at the gate. Kickoff at Bobby Holcomb Field is set for 7:30 p.m. between the 2-0 Chargers and 2-0 Commodores. (September 1, 2010, Page 7)
Oxford cages O’Bannon, CHS Tigers
The Oxford Chargers’ 24-14 win over Charleston on Friday accomplished more than just revenge.
The win exorcised demons that had been with the Chargers for over a year.

OHS avenges loss to Charleston with 24-14 win

Chargers looking for some revenge tonight against CHS
Oxford will be seeking revenge tonight when the Chargers host Charleston at Bobby Holcomb Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 and the game can be heard on 95.5 FM.

Chargers looking for revenge against Tigers
What keeps Terry Johnson awake at night isn’t the upcoming chemistry exam. It’s not coach Johnny Hill’s rigorous workout regiment and it’s definitely not the Boogy Man.
What gives Oxford’s 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive end the shivers to think about is last year’s loss at Charleston.

Fast start leads to one-sided win for OHS
Coach Johnny Hill wanted to see his Oxford Chargers get off to a good start in their season opener with Grenada. Hill got exactly what he wanted Friday night as Oxford scored on its second play from scrimmage, its first two possessions and five of its first six possessions en route to a 41-12 victory over Class 6A Grenada at Bobby Holcomb Field.
Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups sparked the quick start, completing his first pass for a touchdown and going 6-for-10 for 148 yards and three scores as OHS raced out to a 28-0 lead in the opening quarter. Billups, who hooked up with six different receivers in the game, finished 10-for-19 for 213 yards.
The Oxford defense, meanwhile, shut down the potentially explosive visitors in the first half and for all but two possessions the entire night. Grenada managed just two first downs and 37 total yards in the first half; for the game, GHS gained 10 yards on the ground and 141 overall. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)
