Playoff seeding on the line tonight
Important region games are on tap for all three area high school football teams tonight. The No. 1 ranked Lafayette Commodores have an opportunity to not only remain perfect on the season and win 10 or more games again this year, but wrap up the region title with a win at Tunica-Rosa Fort.
Oxford will try to keep pace and finish at least third in Region 1-5A with a win at Lake Cormorant. Water Valley, meanwhile, hosts Winona in an important Region 2-3A game that will go a long way in figuring out which team finishes second or third in the region.
Kickoff for all three games is set for 7 p.m. Lafayette’s game can be heard locally on 93.7 FM. Oxford will be broadcast on 95.5 FM, while the Blue Devils can be heard on 105.5 FM. (October 22, 2010, Page 7A)
Hill expecting to get a test from Gators
An explosive offense and a defense that uses several different wrinkles to gain success is what the Oxford Chargers will be facing when they travel to take on the Lake Cormorant Gators Friday night.
Oxford bounced back from its second loss in Region 2-4A play with a home win over Hernando last week. The Chargers (5-3 overall, 2-2 in the region) have three games left on the year and they need to win at least two to secure a third-place position in the upcoming 5A playoffs. OMS teams fall to Senatobia
Both Oxford’s middle school football teams ended their respective seasons with losses to Senatobia Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Chargers lost 16-14, while the eighth-graders fell 14-8 in the nightcap.
Oxford’s seventh-grade defeated Senatobia 26-6 in the first meeting between the two schools, but was unable to pull out the win on the road after a game-tying two-point play fell incomplete. (October 20, 2010, Page 8)
Chargers top Tigers in region rivalry game
Longtime coaching rivals Johnny Hill of Oxford and Anthony Jenkins of Hernando played another chess match Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field and, in the end, it was Hill’s Chargers that made more right moves in a 31-19 victory.
Oxford scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to jump ahead to stay and added two more scores in the final period to turn back a rally by the visiting Tigers in the game that carried postseason playoff implications. The Chargers evened their Region 1-5A record at 2-2 and improved to 5-3 overall; Hernando dropped to 4-4 and 2-2. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)

WVHS, OHS look to bounce back; LHS heads to Tenn.
After difficult losses a week ago, the Water Valley Blue Devils and Oxford Chargers will be looking to bounce back tonight with home games against South Pontotoc and Hernando respectively.
The Lafayette Commodores, meanwhile, will jump out of region play and travel north to face a difficult Millington Central (Tenn.) Trojans squad.
All kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. Oxford’s game can be heard on 95.5 FM, while Water Valley’s game will be broadcast on 105.5 FM and Lafayette’s on 93.7 FM. (October 15, 2010, Page 6A)
Chargers looking to bounce back Friday
After last week’s emotional last-second 22-20 loss at West Point, it would be understandable if the Oxford Chargers came out flat Friday against Region 1-5A opponent Hernando.
At West Point, the Chargers pulled out all the stops against the always tough Green Wave only to come up just short.
After talking to teammates earlier in the week, Guy Cameron Billups said coming out flat doesn’t seem like it’s even a possibility.
If anything, the Chargers (4-3 overall, 1-2 region) will use the loss as motivation. (October 14, 2010, Page 6)
Billups passes, catches way to POW honor
Oxford pulled out all the stops in its upset bid at West Point last Friday with Guy Cameron Billups as the trigger man.
Not only did Billups complete 17 of 36 passes for two scores and 291 yards, but he also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass on a trick play that put the Chargers ahead 7-0.
On the Chargers’ final scoring drive of the game that allowed the team a chance to tie the Green Wave, Billups also scrambled for a first down on a 12-yard run.
It’s because of his all-around effort in Oxford’s narrow 22-20 loss that Billups earned this week’s EAGLE Player of the Week honor. (October 12, 2010, Page 8)
Late rally not enough to lead OHS past West Point
A chance to climb back atop the Region 1-5A standings for the Oxford Chargers was ultimately dashed by the West Point Green Wave on Friday night at McAllester Field. Despite a late second-half surge on offense led by quarterback Guy Cameron Billups, the Chargers fell to the Green Wave 22-20.
Oxford (4-3 overall, 1-2 in region play) totaled 392 yards against a strong West Point defense, but in the end it was Green Wave quarterback Justin Cox and his offensive mates that were able to find a way to pull out the win that kept them atop the region standings. (October 11, 2010, Page 1B)

Oxford has a great opportunity of finishing first in Region 1-5A if it can defeat West Point on the road, while the Water Valley Blue Devils can remain in first place in Region 2-3A with an upset of Aberdeen on the road.
