Oxford Chargers baseball

Rallying cry catches on, keeps OHS focused ’til end

When Grae Kessinger fielded Cameron Schultz’s grounder and threw across for the final out, the mission was accomplished. Oxford’s 9-0 pasting of George County on Thursday earned the Chargers the MHSAA Class 5A state championship and finally extinguished the flames of disappointment that had been blazing for a year. Ever since New Hope prevented this from possibly happening for the Chargers last season in the North Half finals, Oxford’s had one job. Now it’s complete. (May 24, 2015, Page 2B)

Oxford routs Rebs for 5A state championship

PEARL — It was a fitting end to a dominant year for Oxford High’s baseball team. Chargers’ focus on winning ‘one more’

With the Oxford High baseball team holding a one-game lead in the MHSAA Class 5A state championship series, the idea of the Chargers winning it all may be a foregone conclusion to many. And for good reason. Oxford made it look easy against the best team the south half of the state had to offer in Tuesday’s opener. Houston Roth’s one-hit gem against George County helped the nationally ranked Chargers claim their 14th shutout in 35 games this season. (May 21, 2015, Page 6)

Roth baffles Rebs, puts OHS on brink of title

PEARL — Houston Roth missed his spot with his final pitch in Game 2 of the North Half finals last week against New Hope. All Oxford’s right-hander was missing Tuesday was George County’s bats. Roth fired a one-hitter in the opening game of the MHSAA Class 5A championship series, leading the Chargers to a 4-0 win to put them a win away from their first state title in a decade. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Thursday night at 7. (May 20, 2015, Page 5A)

OHS treating George Co. like any other opponent

Fans soak in Oxford baseball’s ‘crazy ride’

It bothered Jason Barber to some extent that Oxford wasn’t able to celebrate in New Hope. After watching the Trojans dog pile on Oxford’s baseball field a year ago after winning the MHSAA Class 5A North Half title, Barber wanted to return the favor at their place. But as the Chargers’ right-handed ace looked around Edwin Moak Field Saturday night after Oxford’s series-clinching win in this year’s rematch and saw hordes of fans sticking around to share the moment, none of that mattered. (May 18, 2015, Page 6)

Oxford pounds New Hope for 5A North Half title

Oxford has its revenge. Now the Chargers want it all. The pair of losses in last year’s MHSAA Class 5A North Half finals simmered in the belly of Oxford players and coaches for nearly 365 days. The division rivals played all season to get back to the same point, but it’ll be the Chargers playing for a state championship this time. Oxford finished off the Trojans with a 10-3 win Saturday at Edwin Moak Field. (May 17, 2015, Page 1B)

Trojans walk off against Oxford, even series

NEW HOPE — The only power Will Godfrey ever displayed was in batting practice. Until Thursday night. The MHSAA Class 5A North Half championship series took another unexpected turn when New Hope’s junior catcher used every ounce of strength he had to turn on Houston Roth’s final pitch of the night for a walk-off home run, putting an end to Oxford’s perfect season and lifting New Hope to a 1-0 victory at the New Hope baseball field. (May 15, 2015, Page 5A, 7A)

Bianco’s blast gives OHS lead in North Half finals

The Oxford High baseball team escaped with a 3-2 walk-off win over New Hope thanks to Ben Bianco’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night. The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the MHSAA Class 5A North Half championship series. (May 13, 2015, Page 6)
