Chargers open 5A playoffs with familiar opponent
Oxford’s return to the playoffs will be against a familiar foe in Hernando. The best-of-three series begins Friday evening at 6. Chargers win 2-5A despite loss to WPHS
Bittersweet was the only way to describe the feeling Oxford coach Chris Baughman had following Tuesday night’s Region 2-5A finale against West Point at Edwin Moak Field. For the second time in less than a week, the Chargers lost a region game on their home field by making errors and not executing like they had most of the season.
The end result was a 10-7 setback to the Green Wave, a team they beat two other times this year, and a final mark of 5-4 in the region.
Despite the loss, there was one positive gained for the loss, OHS still secured the region regular season title and the coveted No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 5A playoffs thanks to New Hope’s 16-2 loss to Saltillo. Oxford (13-9 overall) will be idle this weekend in the playoffs because of the bye, but is still searching for a way to fully break out of the mini funk that has set in the final few games. OMS Chargers nip LMS in title game
The competitive rivalry between Oxford and Lafayette in baseball doesn’t just reside with the high school players. For the third time this season, the two middle school programs locked horns in a battle that came down to the end of a game and ended up going in the Chargers’ favor.
Oxford rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 6-5 win over Lafayette to capture the Tri-Lakes Conference title at Edwin Moak Field on Monday night. The victory was the third rivalry win of the season for the Chargers, who were able to secure their first conference title as well as a perfect record (7-0) in games that counted within the division. Errors stop OHS from claiming title
Two late inning rallies couldn’t overcome the bevy of mistakes made by the Oxford Chargers in their Region 2-5A game with Saltillo on Friday night at Edwin Moak Field. With a win over the Tigers, the Chargers could have wrapped up the No. 1 seed out of the division for the upcoming Class 5A playoffs. Instead of securing that goal, errors and miscues doomed OHS in an 8-7 loss that coach Chris Baughman saw coming before the start of the contest. (April 18, 2011, Page 3B)
No. 1 seed OMS Chargers defeat South Panola
Led by the pitching of right-hander Houston Roth and an abundance of offense the Oxford Middle School Chargers rolled past the South Panola Tigers 11-2 on Thursday at Edwin Moak Field.
