Head coach Houston Nutt talked about Saturday’s scrimmage after practice, but the biggest news of the day involved junior linebacker D.T. Shackelford, who sustained a knee injury during the practice. The past four years have been one big learning experience for Ole Miss running back Devin Thomas.
Heading into the second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt wanted to see his team show more consistency on both sides of the ball. His hope was his wide receivers would catch throws from the quarterbacks better, the running game would be even more physical and the defense would do an even better job of flying to the football.
Nutt was able to see his offensive line open more holes for the likes of Enrique Davis and Devin Thomas to gain big chunks of yardage, and while the receivers as a group made some plays, the overall performance was still inconsistent for Nutt’s liking. (April 11, 2011, Page 2B)

Football practice has become more enjoyable for Ole Miss sophomore wide receiver Ja-Mes Logan this spring. A year after the 6-foot-2 Natchez native got his feet wet playing in a reserve role at wide receiver, Logan has become one of the two main leaders for a group that is currently short on overall experience. There was the good: Randall Mackey showed consistency passing the ball, the defense provided a constant presence in the offensive backfield, the tight ends looked like reliable targets, head coach Houston Nutt said he liked the attitudes he saw from the defense and incumbent kicker Bryson Rose connected on all four field goals from 40 yards and beyond. The 2010 season was disappointing not only for the Ole Miss defense as a whole, but specifically Wayne Dorsey.
Prior to the season a lot was made of Dorsey transferring to Ole Miss from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
