Ole Miss Baseball

Crouse turns successful offseason into Friday night role for Rebels

There’s been plenty of questions surrounding the Ole Miss baseball team heading into today’s season opener against Wright State.

What hasn’t been in question? Who is taking the place of top draft pick Drew Pomeranz as the Friday night starter.

That honor goes to junior left-hander Matt Crouse, and apparently the choice to go with the Virginian was an obvious one. (February 18, 2011, Page 6A)

What pressure? Newalu confident heading into season as Rebs’ SS

Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco admitted on Monday that sometimes defense — well, reliable defense — can be taken for granted at times.

That was never more evident than in 2008, when the Rebels transitioned from Zack Cozart at shortstop to a combination of Sean Stuyverson, Tim Ferguson and Evan Button and the trio committed 27 errors.

The next two seasons, Ole Miss was lucky enough to have Kevin Mort restore order to the position and with any luck, the Rebels are hoping junior college transfer Blake Newalu will be an extension of Mort’s dependability. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)

Rebs persevere through weather to prepare for season

At times this preseason the Ole Miss baseball Rebels have felt like they called Minneapolis home instead of Oxford.

Due to the recent southern blizzards that shut down local school districts for days at a time, the Rebels have had a difficult couple of weeks leading up to Friday’s season opener against Wright State. (more…) (February 14, 2011, Page 8A)

Prep standout takes offer he can’t refuse

While Ole Miss’ Gridiron Rebels were busy making headlines last week with their strong in-state signing class, the Diamond Rebels quietly added a verbal commitment from Madison Central left-handed pitcher Zach Irwin.

Although Irwin’s step parents are Mississippi State supporters, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder said Ole Miss recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and as a result, he decided to give his verbal commitment to the Rebels last Friday.

Because baseball teams are allotted just 11.7 scholarships to distribute amongst 27 players on a 35-man roster — each of the 27 scholarship players must have at least .25 percent of a scholarship — the amount in which a recruit is offered is a big deal, unlike in sports like football and basketball where student athletes are awarded full scholarships. (February 8, 2011, Page 1B)

More than just playing for fun

COLUMN: Fans in attendance of Saturday’s 7-0 win for the current Rebel squad over the alumni team got a glimpse at what the backbone of Ole Miss’ pitching staff will likely resemble when the season opens on Feb. 18 against Wright State.

Against the professional Rebel squad — which, admittedly, for the most part had not faced live pitching in over four months — Ole Miss’ three likely weekend starters and closer allowed just two hits during nine innings of work. (more…) (February 7, 2011, Page 2B)
