Local columnist Deidra Jackson, who makes her living in journalism, never thought she’d see the day when she would give up on “breaking news” and 24-hour news channels. It’s happened, however, and Jackson says it’s because everything’s “breaking” in today’s world. (June 7, 2012, Page 4A)

In 1962, when William Faulkner died, The Oxford EAGLE was a weekly newspaper and about the only way to deliver news sooner was through handbills. There are questions from business owners, however, about the frequency and randomness of the checks. (October 14, 2011, Page 1A)

With that bit of info, local columnist Deidra Jackson admits she’s caught up in the Casey Anthony murder trial, which sparks thoughts back to earlier days as a reporter covering cases in court. (June 30, 2011, Page 4)

                    Counting college students complicated

Oxford and other college towns have a vested interest in making sure students fill out their census forms by April 1.
The number of students living in a county helps determine the number of seats in Congress a state might have, how many federal dollars can be funneled to a state and its communities, and how much student loan money is doled out.
But, as Oxford and University of Mississippi officials are well aware, obtaining an accurate student head count is no easy task.
