Tourism dollars increase in Oxford
Travel and tourism expenditures by visitors to Lafayette County were about $92 million in FY 2011, up from $83 million in FY 2009 and $85.7 million in FY 2010, according to figures released by the Mississippi Development Authority for the Fiscal Year 2011, which runs from July 2010 to June 2011. Signs of new Olin plant seen
On Tuesday, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors signed a resolution of intention authorizing and approving the county to receive a loan for $6 million from the Mississippi Development Authority for the purpose of land development and infrastructure for the 500,000-square foot plant Olin Corp. will build next to the existing Winchester plant in the Lafayette County Industrial Park.
A legal ad in Tuesday’s EAGLE also asked for subcontractors to qualify to be prospective bidders for a slew of construction jobs at the new plant. (January 19, 2011, Page 1)
Abbeville gets new town hall
Despite the fact the heat wasn’t working yet, members of the Abbeville Board of Alderman and Mayor Betsy Aloway held their regular meeting in the town’s newly built Town Hall for the first time Thursday night.
Construction began on the new building in early 2010 after the original building was torn down due to termite damage. Abbeville received a $100,000 grant in 2009 from the Mississippi Development Authority for the project. (January 7, 2011, Page 1A)
WV plant expansion will add more jobs
There is welcome news in Water Valley, after months of negotiations — Borg Warner Drivetrain Systems’ Water Valley facility will be expanding. The expansion will include the addition of a production line which means more jobs. According to a press release the new production line will create 120 jobs, but branch manager Kent Tobin clarified that there won’t be exactly 120 positions to fill, as some will be filled internally by current employees.
