Title game win epitomizes Lafayette’s season
A season that started in the scorching heat of July culminated with a win in the MHSAA’s Class 4A state championship for the Lafayette Commodores Saturday evening at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Lafayette became the first school in the state to win 16 games in a season by knocking off North Pike 31-6 to capture the school’s first football state title.
Focus, dedication and desire were just three of the many intangibles the Commodores displayed on the field on a consistent basis this year, while an overpowering defense and offense, led by quarterback Jeremy Liggins and running back Demarkus Dennis, seemed to dispatch opponents with little trouble each week.
Saturday’s victory over the Jaguars epitomized how the Commodores won games all season. Liggins bullied his way through the Jaguars’ defense for three scores and 150 yards, while Dennis moved the chains with dazzling runs through the middle and outside of Lafayette’s formations. LHS looking to make school history
A second chance to make up for last season’s loss to St. Stanislaus in the Class 4A state title game is what the No. 1 Lafayette Commodores are hoping to accomplish Saturday against North Pike at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
With the goal of returning to Jackson achieved with last Friday’s win over Noxubee County, the Commodores (15-0 overall) are just one win away from winning their first title in school history and completely getting over last year’s bitter defeat.
From LHS coach Anthony Hart’s standpoint, last year’s 35-16 loss to St. Stanislaus taught his players a lesson about accomplishing things the first time. (December 3, 2010, Page 8A)
Tight knit staff key to LHS success
A strong connection between the current members of the Lafayette High football team and former members has always been something that has made the Commodores a force to be reckoned with each fall.
