Troops return, others prepare to depart

Some area troops with the Mississippi National Guard have just come home from deployment overseas while others preparing to head to Afghanistan. In Oxford, veteran groups are busy preparing for Monday’s Memorial Day Ceremony to honor all veterans who saw their final deployment in service to their country. (May 24, 2013, Page 1A, 12A)

9/11 is not a happy day for anyone

The wounds are too fresh and too painful, staff writer Alyssa Schnugg writes,  to make it seem correct for someone to say “Happy Patriot Day” on 9/11. Schnugg explores the approach some have to 9/11, Memorial Day and other “holidays.” (September 13, 2012, Page 4)

Thank a veteran today – and every other day, too

We’re losing our veterans at a fast rate because of age, but that shouldn’t mean that we don’t honor the ones still with us and those serving today on Veterans Day. Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at the special holiday and what it means to him. (November 11, 2011, Page 4A)

            Sturm Und Drang

Americans are now experiencing tremendous storm and stress – or Sturm und Drang, as the Germans call it. Local columnist Jimmy Reed writes about the challenges we’ve faced through the years, and notes that we should use the upcoming Memorial Day holiday to honor those who gave on battlefields – but also those who fought and won economic and natural wars on the home front. (May 24, 2011, Page 4)

              Those who gave all

While current and past veterans were recognized Monday,  the annual Memorial Day  ceremony at the National Guard Armory was a time to remember the veterans who didn’t make it back home. (June 1, 2010, Page 1A)

                Marking Memorial Day

Local veterans are asking area residents to help them remember those who have made the greatest sacrifice while serving their country.
The annual Memorial Day Recognition Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the National Guard Armory, located off the Sisk Avenue exit of Highway 7 N. (May 28, 2010, Page 1A)

Keeping safe, healthy during the season

With the Memorial Day weekend marking the unofficial start of summer, it’s almost impossible to avoid mosquitoes, lots of sunshine and barbecues over the next few months.
Taking a few extra steps can keep summer a safe and happy time for all residents. (May 26, 2010, Page 1A)
