Lafayette’s Rafnson wins Player of the Year award

On a senior-laden Lafayette volleyball squad this season, it was junior Charlotte Rafnson that stood out most.

Despite being a first-time starter at libero, Rafnson was an integral part of a Lady Commodores team that advanced to the North Half title game and finished with a 16-7 record, and because of Rafnson’s leadership and acrobatic playing style, she is the 2010 Oxford EAGLE Player of the Year. (November 16, 2010, Page 1B)

Win propels Lafayette to North Half

There have been a slew of matches recently where the Lafayette Lady Commodores volleyball team was able to cruise to victory.

While Lafayette still defeated Ackerman 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) at home to advance to the third round of the Class 1 playoffs, Tuesday’s victory was not one of those matches. (October 6, 2010, Page 9)

Adjustments pay off as LHS rolls Caledonia

All season the Lafayette volleyball team has battled sluggish starts.

Saturday’s Class 1 first-round playoff matchup at Caledonia was no different, but luckily for the Lady Commodores, they were able to overcome slow starts in all three games to claim a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) victory. (more…) (October 4, 2010, Page 4B)

Lady ‘Dores finish regular season strong

The Oxford Tri-Match Tournament meant two different things for the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Lady Commodores Thursday evening.

For a young Oxford squad, the tournament meant the end to what has been a difficult season with only one senior.

For Lafayette, the tournament — in which the Lady ‘Dores topped Oxford 2-0 (25-16, 25-11) and Tupelo 2-0 (25-20, 25-20) — was a good warmup for their first-round playoff match on Saturday at Caledonia. (October 1, 2010, Page 6A)

Lady ‘Dores get big volleyball win Thursday night

Reports of the Lafayette Lady Commodores’ demise may have been slightly premature.

On Thursday, Lafayette virtually checked its ticket to the playoffs with a convincing 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-10, 25-16) win over Class I, Region 2 opponent Center Hill.

The emotional victory subsequently put the Mustangs and Lady Commodores in a tie for the second spot in Region 2, but according to the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s rule book, Lafayette will advance because it wins the third tie breaker. (September 24, 2010, Page 7A)

                Lewisburg eliminates LHS from playoffs

The Lafayette Lady Commodores will not be making a second-straight run at a state title.

With a return trip to Jackson on the line, the Lady ‘Dores were unable to knock off Region 2 leading Lewisburg, falling at home 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-19) on Tuesday. (September 22, 2010, Page 6)

Byhalia no match for Isom, Lafayette

Byhalia head coach Stacy Filocco couldn’t help but smile during Tuesday’s match at Lafayette as Shaq Isom repeatedly buried stray passes from her overmatched players at the net.

“She was very aggressive at the net. We kept feeding her balls and she was putting them away,” Filocco said matter-of-factly following Lafayette’s 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-9) victory at the LHS gym. (September 15, 2010, Page 9)

                    LHS volleyball tops Senatobia

The Lady Commodores volleyball squad continued their winning ways on Thursday, picking up a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16) victory over Senatobia at home. The win improves Lafayette to 8-2 on the season.

Next up for Lafayette is a trip to Lewisburg on Tuesday. (September 3, 2010, Page 10A)
