Amy Scribner blends in with her players rather well.

That is, at least until she begins to give direction and direct practice. (more…) (August 1, 2012, Page 7)

Versatile Smith took her game to another level

Heading into this season Lafayette volleyball coach Rachel Wenzel was faced with a rather large problem: How could the Lady Commodores replace the production and leadership that left along with the graduated senior class?

She knew it would be no easy task, but senior middle blocker Ashley Smith went to Wenzel and requested that her coach trust her enough to allow her to play all the way around, rather than be substituted in the back row. (more…) (October 26, 2011, Page 1B)

Lady Bruins eliminate LHS from playoffs

MADISON — Rachel Wenzel knew her team had its work cut out for it well before the team bus arrived on the gated campus of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Madison on Tuesday.

      Her assumptions were correct.

The Lady Bruins were as good as their 16-match winning streak suggested and they did just enough to eliminate Lafayette from the first round of the Class I playoffs with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) victory. (October 5, 2011, Page 6)

After Oxford jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, Lafayette chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 17-17 and again at 19-19. (more…) (September 30, 2011, Page 7A)

            LHS volleyball tops Byhalia

The Lafayette volleyball team earned a lopsided victory at Byhalia on Thursday, topping the Lady Indians 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-7) to improve to 6-4 overall. Lafayette holds on to top Tigers

The Lafayette volleyball team faced off against a somewhat familiar foe on Tuesday.

The Ripley Tigers aren’t familiar in the sense that the two squads play one another often. (more…) (September 14, 2011, Page 6)

                Lafayette downs improved Lady Devils

WATER VALLEY — The Water Valley volleyball team has showed marked improvement over the course of the last two weeks.

After being over-powered on Aug. 25 at Lafayette, the Lady Blue Devils played a competitive match in the return trip on Thursday, falling to the Lady Commodores 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21).

Even if the end result was still a loss, it was obvious at Water Valley’s auxiliary gym that the Lady Blue Devils have made significant strides as a team under first-year coach Casey Clouse. (September 9, 2011, Page 8A)

LHS overcomes slow start, tops Senatobia

Rachel Wenzel was  momentarily speechless following her Lady Commodores’ volleyball match against Senatobia on Thursday evening.

After dropping the first two sets, Lafayette rallied to claim a 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-9) victory at the LHS gym. (September 2, 2011, Page 9A)

The Lady Commodores volleyball squad made quick work of Water Valley on Thursday, cruising to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-9) win at the LHS gym.

For Lafayette (2-3 overall), Thursday’s match provided coach Rachel Wenzel an opportunity to tweak her starting lineup. (August 26, 2011, Page 7A)
