Lafayette’s Mallory Davis and Barron Pruitt made history Tuesday as the duo captured the first individual state tennis championship in Jackson. The duo defeated Newton County’s Blake Cochran and Shannon St. Clarie 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 to win the match. Davis and Pruitt defeated Cole Morrow and Taylor Long of Purvis to advance on the first day. Lafayette ended the regular season with two matches on the road at Corinth.
The Commodores beat host Corinth, 5-2, before losing 5-2 to Newton County. In the victory over Corinth, Lafayette’s Mallory Davis defeated Catherine Coleman 6-2, 6-4 in girls singles and then gained one of the two points for the team against Newton County when she beat Kaley Bufkin 6-4, 6-0. Lafayette tennis’ most complete effort of the season resulted in its most impressive tennis win to date Thursday against Center Hill at the Oxford-University Stadium courts.
