Lafayette got off to a great start in the Class 4A playoffs Monday morning with a 6-1 win over Kosciusko on the road. Lafayette swept the doubles action to gain the match win, while Mallory Davis peformed well in her singles match. Davis defeated Jessica Reynolds 6-0, 6-2 to gain the victory for LHS. Lafayette qualified six tennis players for next month’s MHSAA individual state tournament Thursday afternoon. The Commodores competed against New Albany, Senatobia, North Pontotoc, Tunica-Rosa Fort and Lewisburg in the Division 2-4A individual tournament held at the John Leslie Courts. Consistency and the ability to play both singles and doubles has earned Lafayette’s Mallory Davis a scholarship offer from Meridian Community College. Davis made her commitment to coach Wanda McPhail binding Monday when she signed her Letter of Intent to play for the Eagles.
McPhail, who has guided MCC women’s team to eight Region 23 titles since 2003, said Davis was the only women’s player she has offered and subsequently signed this year. (April 17, 2012, Page 6)
Avent’s Park was surrounded by spectators Thursday afternoon as Lafayette and Oxford closed out their regular seasons with the annual tennis meeting between the two schools.
With both squads already a part of the Class 4A (LHS) and 5A (OHS) playoffs, Thursday’s match was about different things for each coach.
The Chargers defeated the Commodores 5-2 but the two wins were a marked improvement for Debbie Swindoll’s Commodores, who lost 7-0 to OHS last year.
Apart from the two wins, the No. 1 boys doubles match had to be decided with a tiebreaker, while two other doubles matches were also competitive. (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)
