Plenty of new faces at LHS on Tuesday

Tuesday proved to be a busy evening at Lafayette High School.

Not only were each of the five baseball and softball teams filled with underclassmen looking to make their mark and get their shot at starting, but the Water Valley and Lafayette softball teams were also under the direction of new head coaches in Casey Clouse and Katie Moore respectively. OCR investigation leads to hearing for Lafayette school district

An investigation on the part of the Office for Civil Rights has led to a public hearing regarding the demotion and re-assignment of former Lafayette High softball coach Cay Papagolos earlier this year.

The OCR is currently investigating whether the Lafayette County School District failed to provide equal athletic opportunities to participants in the girls’ athletics program at LHS and at the middle school. (more…) (May 31, 2011, Page 8)

Lafayette’s Hollis wins MVP award

Led by Corey Hollis as the District 2-4A MVP, six Lafayette Lady Commodores were selected the All-District team recently. Joining Hollis on the team were Kelsey Kesler, M.C. Pate, Cameron Mize, Rae Drewrey, Avery McCullough and Kendall Glass as an honorable mention. (May 23, 2011, Page 7)

Lady ‘Dores fall to defending 4A champs

The Lafayette Lady Commodores’ dream of making a deep run in the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs came to a premature end on Saturday.

Led by pitcher Brianna Gable, the defending Class 4A state champion Lady Vikings knocked off Lafayette on the road on Saturday 3-1. North Pontotoc won Game 1 of the best-of-three series at home, 4-3 in eight innings.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the first, Gable was able to consistently keep Lafayette’s batters off balance. (May 2, 2011, Page 2B)

Confident ‘Dores to face North Pontotoc

It’s been an interesting season for the Lafayette softball program to say the least.

While talking about her team’s upcoming Class 4A first round matchup against North Pontotoc on Thursday, head coach Melinda Scruggs agreed that the old adage “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” applies to her Lady Commodores. (April 29, 2011, Page 6A)

Lafayette softball captures region

Lafayette’s girls softball team continued to play well and demonstrate a potent offense with a 21-2 win over Byhalia on Tuesday night. The victory allowed the Lady Commodores to capture the Region 2-4A regular season title and finish as the No. 1 seed heading into the Class 4A playoffs next week. (more…) (April 20, 2011, Page 2B)

LHS rally knocks out Lady Patriots

Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe the girls fastpitch softball game played between Lewisburg and Lafayette at LHS on Thursday night. In a contest that felt more like a heavyweight title fight, it was the Lady Commodores that delivered the final hit that garnered a knockout blow in the bottom of the seventh inning. LHS softball routs Lewisburg

The Lafayette softball team scored three runs in the third and seventh inning to rout Lewisburg on the road 12-0. Lafayette collected 14 hits as a team while forcing the Lady Patriots to make six errors. (more…) (April 13, 2011, Page 10)

Lafayette claims season sweep over WVHS

A heartbreaking one-run loss to Senatobia last Friday night is something the Lafayette Lady Commodores didn’t allow to linger  on Tuesday against the Water Valley Blue Devils. Instead of playing flat and unfocused, LHS was able to overcome the setback with a 6-3 home win over the Lady Blue Devils to sweep the season series.

Six different players recorded at least one hit in the victory that saw LHS break a 2-2 tie with four runs in the third inning. (more…) (March 30, 2011, Page 7)

LHS softball falls to Senatobia
