Alley Houghton was in for a surprise Tuesday morning. Lafayette High’s rising senior soccer player joined the rest of her teammates for a meeting called by coach Melinda Scruggs. Something else could’ve come up, Houghton thought, but she figured the Commodores’ state championship rings had arrived and that Scruggs wanted to hand them out. That wasn’t it. Scruggs instead played a video. By the time it was over, Houghton learned she had been selected as the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year. Gatorade is in its third decade of selecting players of the year in each state in partnership with USA Today High School Sports, and Houghton is the first player in school history to receive the prestigious honor in girls’ soccer. Melinda Scruggs wasn’t quite sure what to expect from her young Lafayette team heading into the 2012-13 season.
The Lafayette Lady Commodores opened their season 2-0 after knocking off Saltillo 3-2 and South Pontotoc 6-0 on Saturday. Alley Houghton scored all three goals against Saltillo and chipped in another four goals against SPHS. Abbey Pate scored Lafayette’s other two goals against the Lady Cougars. LHS returns to the pitch Tuesday at Grenada. Lafayette’s boys will be making their debut against the Chargers. (November 12, 2012, Page 5B)
