Think before you burn
With warmer temperatures and light breezes, burning leaves and lawn debris can get out of hand quickly. However, the U.S. Forestry and Mississippi Forestry Commission have been burning hundreds of acres over the last week in an attempt to keep wildfires at bay. (March 22, 2011, Page 1)
Morning fire destroys home
About 19 firefighters with the Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Department responded to 852 Highway 30 East this morning to the home of Freddie Pinion of Alfa Insurance. The house was engulfed in flames, but Pinion and his family — including two children — made it out of the house safely.
Roy said the cause of the fire is unknown as of this morning, but County Fire Marshal Darren Roy will investigate to determine how the blaze started. (January 13, 2011, Page 1)
County firefighters set for wildfire fighting
Lafayette County volunteer firefighters got a little help staying cool from the Mississippi Forestry Commission recently.
Thanks to a grant from the commission, the Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Department received 20 “ready kits,” which contain a Nomex yellow coverall suit, wildland Bullard helmet, Nomex flame-resistant neck shroud, headlamp, gloves and safety glasses all packed into a yellow tote bag. Homes of convicted child molesters burn this morning
With the former occupants in prison, two homes that were left empty burned down early this morning on County Road 250.
Firefighters with the Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Department responded to 49 CR 250 at about 4:54 this morning where they discovered a wood house and a mobile home on fire. (August 5, 2010, Page 1)
Green ends fires
As fields and forests green up with the arrival of spring, wildfire season is winding down in Lafayette County. The Mississippi Forestry Commission was called out to about six or seven wildfires in the county during the month of March, and Lafayette County volunteer firefighters battled a few more on their own.
