          UPD officer wins top award

          Capt. Thelma Curry of the University Police Department was selected the 2013 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association Tuesday. Sheriff’s secretary, Cathy Connor, was awarded Support Personnel of the Year. (January 30, 2014, Page 1, 14)

            County gets grant for diving equipment

            The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department recently received a $16,900 grant to purchase diving equipment. The grant was spurred by the disappearance of a teen in the Yocona River last year in which the sheriff’s department was required to borrow divers and diving equipment from neighboring counties. (January 22, 2014, Page 1)

                Sheriff’s Department arrests 3 for murder

                The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department has made three arrests in the shooting death of University of Mississippi graduate student.
                According to Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Alan Wilburn the three men were on and off again students at the University of Mississippi and lived next door to the victim, Zacharias Herculese McClendon of Gulfport. Wilburn said the motive was robbery.
                Charged with capitol murder are: Steven Matthew Wilbanks, 22, of North Carolina; Derrick Boone, 23 of Laurel and Joseph Lyons, 20, of Houston, Texas.
