Versatility and speed are two big attributes college baseball coaches, at all levels, are looking for first when they sign a prospect out of high school. WATER VALLEY — High school baseball returned to the area Monday in the form of two dress rehearsals for the Water Valley Blue Devils and Lafayette Commodores. Both teams played two four-inning contests at Blue Devil Field, including a matchup against each other in the nightcap of the day-long jamboree.
Lafayette got the better of the Blue Devils with a 1-0 win, but both LHS coach Greg Lewis and WVHS coach Kary Bridges saw positives and things they can both build on.
Lewis, whose Commodores lost 5-4 to Grenada just before playing Water Valley, was focused on how his pitchers performed. (February 21, 2012, Page 9)
The standout senior has been considered one of the better middle infielders around for a while and his play for the Commodores, and his summer league team, garnered him an offer from NECC. Stanley turned that offer into a guarantee when he signed to play for coach Kent Farris and former Lafayette coach Richy Harrelson, who raved about Stanley’s overall ability. Former Oxford pitcher Hunt Halford had quite the outing for the Tippah County Tribe of the Cotton States Baseball League on Saturday. Halford recorded a no-hitter in a 3-1 victory over the Golden Triangle Jets, allowing one run on one walk while striking out three in seven innings of work.
