‘Dores punch Vikings back to even 4A series

Provoking a team with as much fight and talent as the Lafayette Commodores have before a critical baseball game isn’t the most advisable thing for a team to do.

One night after North Pontotoc defeated LHS 6-5 in the first game of the MHSAA Class 4A playoff second-round series, the Commodores paid the Vikings back in the form of a 5-2 win at W.V. Brewer Field on Saturday night. The third, and decisive game, of the series will be played tonight, weather permitting.

LHS (23-6 overall) was already motivated to win the second game after losing two leads in the opener, but the Vikings (21-5) only made those emotions worse prior to the contest when they gathered in center field to show how little they thought of Lafayette’s baseball tradition. (May 2, 2011, Page 1B)

Late-inning tag lifts Lafayette past Kosciusko

KOSCIUSKO — A dive, a drive and an outstanding individual effort on the mound proved to be the winning formula for the Lafayette Commodores to earn a 2-1 win over Kosciusko in the decisive game of a best-of-three Class 4A playoff series on Saturday.

LHS (22-5 overall) was able to advance to a second round matchup with North Pontotoc by holding off the Whippets when it mattered most. After LHS opened the series with an 11-3 win at home on Friday night, Kosciusko defeated the Commodores 9-4 in the second game to force the winner-take-all third game.
