Making space for active adults

Leisure Lifestyles of Oxford, a senior citizen recreation group, will soon have its own space inside the Oxford Activity Center. Work to convert the old karate room is expected to be complete at the end of the month. Plans for the expansion of the John Leslie Tennis Courts are also picking up speed.     Tennis courts, transit facility bids rejected

      BMX races may start in fall

      The BMX track at FNC park is almost complete. A BMX specialist could be in Oxford in July. After the track is completed, the Oxford Park Commission has 90 days to hold its first BMX sanctioned race. OPC is also opening the bidding process for the tennis court expansion on Friday. (June 28, 2012, Page 2)

        Serving tennis plan again

        After plans to spend $3 million to expand the John Leslie Tennis Facility from eight to 20 courts fizzled last year when the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors refused to join with the city of Oxford and University of Mississippi to fund it, a scaled-down version seems to have a better chance of moving forward. (January 20, 2012, Page 1A)

          City officials to seek funds for pedestrian bridge, tennis courts

          The Oxford Board of Aldermen gave the go-ahead to city officials to take the next steps toward a new pedestrian bridge over Highway 6 from the Old Taylor Road exit and the expansion of 12 new tennis courts. (January 4, 2012, Page 2)

            County OKs $4.5 million for multipurpose building

            The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors voted to set aside $4.5 million for the construction of a multipurpose building in a 3 to 2 vote. (October 4, 2011, Page 3)

              Tennis courts on hold?

              The John Leslie tennis facility expansion may be put on hold up to a year after the county did not yet approve the project and the city wants to hold off to focus on the building of the new fire department station. (August 1, 2011, Page 1A)

                County still cool to tennis courts

                Representatives from the University of Mississippi, the city of Oxford and Lafayette County met Friday during a work session to discuss the county’s involvement in a project to build 12 additional tennis courts at the John Leslie Tennis Facility near the Oxford Activity Center. (July 25, 2011, Page 1, 3)

                  County shows little love for tennis

                    Tennis effort may move forward

                    The University of Mississippi has committed $800,000 towards the expansion of the Leslie Tennis Facility. The city has also agreed to $1.5 million. The money is based on whether the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors will also agree to pay $1.5 million for the project. (May 25, 2011, Page 1)
