Sisk named female Athlete of the Year
Erika Sisk’s fantastic spring in track and field continued to produce accolades today when she was named Mississippi’s Gatorade Female Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 season. Sisk, who helped guide the Lady Chargers to a third straight MHSAA Class 5A state championship in May, was caught a little off guard about winning the award but wasn’t completely surprised after winning the Mississippi PopStar Awards that were sponsored by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in May.
Sisk, who is getting close to finishing a summer semester at Murray State, said she was excited about winning the award. She won several individual state championships this past season, but her leap of 40 feet, 1 inch in the triple jump was the second-best leap for a female athlete at the state meet and the result that garnered her the most attention moving forward.
